Prior to European settlement, the area around Chicago was populated by
the Miami, Sauk, Fox, and Potawatomi tribes. The first European to settle
in the area arrived in the 1780s, but the Town of Chicago was not organized
until 1833. Since then, Chicago became the home of many firsts—including
the world's first skyscraper in 1885.
Throughout its history, Chicago has expanded to become a major crossroads
of the shipping and many other industries. Chicago is currently the most
populous city in the state of Illinois, as well as the American Midwest.
The city's current population is 2.7 million, with 9.5 million residents
calling the Chicagoland area home.
